The Vectren Corp. Story

How an American regulated energy utility company replaced diversity targets with a human equity approach that unlocked record engagement, stronger stakeholder trust, and market leading returns that culminated in a successful acquisition.

Objectives

Vectren Corporation (now CenterPoint Energy) faced significant challenges to its objective of being an attractive employer of choice in its industry. Among these were: An industry in transition because of technological changes and the increased use of renewable energy, an aging population in key leadership positions, the imperative to be attractive to millennials and younger generations to remain relevant to its customers and to stay ahead of disruptive forces.

Solution

The Human Equity framework was integrated into Vectren’s larger culture and infrastructure (its core values, mission, vision, and purpose; and its internal engagement, communication, and performance management processes and systems). This was followed by goal-setting and scope-focusing sessions, where the shared vision was for the company to become to be perceived as an employer and supplier of choice for all (no matter their background, culture, or experiences), and build a culture driven by Human Equity. 

Outcomes & Impact

The culture shift at Vectren Corp. proved durable and yielded the following key outcomes:

1. Radical Employee Engagement Gains
An unprecedented 20% increase in engagement scores which management attributed to engaging employees in a new way as guided by Human Equity principles. 

2. External Recognition
Vectren was recognized as an employer and supplier of choice by external parties leading to Improved talent attraction/retention. 

3. Improved Stakeholder Relations
Improved relationships with its key stakeholders, including its customers and unions.

4. Industry Record Share Value Increase
Vectren reported record-high share values and delivered the highest total shareholder returns of all electric utility companies during that 5 year period. Leadership noted the Human Equity project as a major contributor to this outcome
